Sporades Sightseeing

The islands of Sporades are located on the northern side of the Aegean Sea, right opposite the peninsula of Pelion and the island of Evia. While Skiathos is the most cosmopolitan island of Sporades, the other three islands (Skopelos, Alonissos, and Skyros) have a more authentic atmosphere.

Island hopping to the Sporades

It is easy to combine island hopping around the Sporades islands. Ferries to Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonissos depart from the ports of Volos or Agios Konstantinos in the mainland of Greece. Ferries to Skyros depart from the port of Kymi in Evia island, but in summer Skyros is also connected by local ferry to Skopelos and Alonissos.

Therefore, in order to combine all the Sporades islands in one holiday, you can take the ferry from Agios Konstantinos or Volos to Skiathos, then another ferry to Skopelos, continue by ferry from Skopelos to Alonissos and lastly you take a local ferry from Alonissos to Skyros. You can return to the mainland by bus from Kymi or by plane from Skyros to Athens and Thessaloniki.

Things to see in the Sporades

There are some interesting things to see on the islands of Sporades. Very impressive are the boat trips from Skiathos, particularly the boat trip to Lalaria and the Medieval Castle and to the uninhabited island of Tsougria. Also from Skiathos, there are daily yacht excursions to Skopelos and Alonissos.

Another nice boat trip is from Alonissos to the Marine Park of Northern Aegean, where visitors have the chance to swim in secluded beaches and explore uninhabited islands. This marine park is a protected region as the Mediterranean Monk Seal goes there to reproduce.

The Sporades islands also have many interesting monasteries and churches. The Monastery of Evangelistria in Skiathos is very interesting, while worth to visit is the church of Agios Ioannis Kastri in Skopelos, also known as the Mamma Mia Church because this is where some scenes of the Hollywood movie were filmed.
