Poros Architecture

Poros is very close to Athens, comprising a small but famous getaway destination for many Athenians. The island pair of Sferia and Kalavria boasts the beauty of two architectural styles, the impressive neoclassical buildings, and the farmhouses which coexist in total harmony. During the 18th century, after the Greek War of Independence, the capital and main village of the island, Poros Town, featured a beautiful collection of elegant properties with aristocratic facades and luxurious interiors.

The development of the neoclassical town began in the 19th century which led to a new era in Poros. However, the change in the island pair's appearance brought forward numerous buildings of unique design that stand to this day. Amidst the neoclassical houses, a great number of churches exist, adding a special charm to the architecture of Poros.

Poros is a mixture of old and contemporary characteristics and home to some fine examples of neoclassical architecture like the Deimezi building, made of gray and red stone, the splendid shop of Grivas and the elegant Villa Galini, which is one of the most beautiful houses of Poros that has hosted famous Greek and international personalities of Art and Literature. The monastery of Zoodochos Pigi lies in the heart of a verdant area and is a perfect example of 18th-century monastic architecture. The architectural progress of Poros is well-demonstrated around the main town, too.

The area also possesses an international element. Around the 19th century, after Greece had earned its independence, the Russian navy was granted a small cove to operate their ships on Poros. A naval base was built, encouraging the growth of the Russian population in Poros, which was ultimately abandoned by the early 20th century. The Russian Dockyard remains an important landmark of Poros to this day.

Poros' few settlements are dotted with two-storied whitewashed houses with colored windows and pottery decoration on their balconies. Walking through the villages of Poros, you will get lost in the labyrinth of steep narrow streets around their beautiful houses and experience a peaceful atmosphere.

Visitors can enjoy their stay in many of the traditional houses or premium hotels.
