The Temple of Zeus was built in the 5th century BC The temple was made of limestone and marble. The entire design of the temple was made following the Doric style. The temple has thirteen columns on both sides and six columns each at two ends. Historical records narrate that a giant golden statue of Zeus was found inside this temple. It took almost thirteen years to complete the temple. When the construction of the temple completed, the Spartans gifted a golden tripod for placing it on the top of the gable. Today this ancient site is full of trees and lush vegetation. The temple was never entirely completed. It went under renovation many times. Unfortunately, both the temple and the statue of Zeus were destroyed by an earthquake. Tall trees that provide their refreshing shade.
