Churches in Olympia

Platanos is part of the municipality of Ancient Olympia, a verdant village on the way to the archaeological site. The first church was founded in 1831 after the personal work of 47 families. Until 1900 it was the metropolis of the village. In a close distance is the church of Agioi Theodoroi, the church of Saint George and the church of Saint John the Theologian.

The most important religious site you will find close to Olympia is the Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna in Kyllini. Its structure begun during the Byzantine times and it was completed by the Franks. It has some remarkable frescoes in its interior. Close to the monastery lies the small church of Analipsi in a beautiful verdant surrounding. In Katakolon, a lovely seaside town close to Ancient Olympia lies the beautiful church of Agios Nikolaos, the protector saint of the town.
