The Nafplion Annex of the Greek National Gallery hosts the exhibition The Sea in Modern Greek Painting until December 30th, 2014. This exhibition, made up exclusively with works from the collection of the National Gallery, shows the deep connection of the Greek people with the sea and aims to familiarize the public with the seascape in Modern Greek painting. In fact, the sea has been a source of inspiration for Greek artists since the late 19th century.
The exhibition is divided in three parts. The first part includes works of the great Greek seascape painters, Konstantinos Volanakis, Vassileios Chatzis and Ioannis Altamouras, where we can actually notice the first touches of impressionism.
The second part includes early 20th century works of Konstantinos Maleas, Nikolaos Lytras, Konstantinos Parthenis and Michalis Economou, where the artistic wave of modernism is identified. The third part displays landscape paintings of artists with individual style, such as Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika, Agenor Asteriadis, Panayiotis Tetsis and Costas Tsoclis.
