2009 declared Year of Giannis Ritsos

The Prefecture of Laconia and the Municipality of Monemvasia have organized events to honour their poet, Giannis Ritsos. As 2009 has been declared by the Ministry of Culture as Year Of Giannis Ritsos with the completion of 100 years from his birth (1/5/1909), his homeland, Monemvasia, is getting ready to pay tributes to its most famous personality and one of the greatest Greek poets ever. Events will last from May 1st till September 15th, 2009 and will include: - an exhibition with the theme Ritsos Painting where paintings of the poet, donated by Benaki Museum, will be presented in Monemvasia - declaration of a musical competition, where musicians are asked to set his poems in music - a suggestion to the Hellenic Post Office for the edition of stamps with the picture of Ritsos and Monemvasia - a concert in the Sainopouleio Theatre of Sparta by the Camerata Orchestra, where the Epitaph and other melodized poems will be presented
