Few days ago, the Central Archaeological Board of Greece approved a master plan for the reformation of the Upper Town of Monemvasia, the highest spot of the Castle.

The Byzantine icon of Christ Elkomenos (Jesus in Pain in Greek) was recently returned to the church of Elkomenos in the Castle of Monemvasia, from where it had been stolen 32 years ago.

As 2009 has been declared as the Year of Giannis Ritsos, the prefecture of Laconia and the municipality of Monemvasia are organizing events to honour their great poet.
