Olympia Culture Festivals & International Folk Dance Festival in Katakolo, Peloponnese

Jun 10, 2016 — Sep 04, 2016 • Category: Events

For all those who are fans of the traditional Greek scene, a new event will be opening its doors to the public for the first year in the picturesque village of Katakolo on the western side of Peloponnese. The village is situated in Olympia of Peloponnese and will be taking place from the 10th of June until the 4th of September. The Olympia Culture Festivals are a new series of three festivals which combine different acts and aim at highlighting the local tradition and history of Greece. The festivals will be taking place in Epihotel Odysseas in contribution with many theater groups, choirs and art intellectuals.
The festivals are organised by the Politistiko Parko (Cultural Park) of Athens, an institution with a long experience in organising Cultural and Environmental Events and whose main interests focus on the conservation and preservation of the tradition and folk customs of Greece.
Since the festival is in Olympia, the place where the Olympic Games started taking place for the first time and which carries very significant historical value and importance, the festival is an effort to revive our values and remember our past.
The second part of the festival, namely the International Folk Dance Festival from the 17th to the 27th of June addresses an open call to choirs and traditional dance groups from Greece to perform various local dances and music. However, many choirs and artists from Italy, Cyprus and Montenegro will be participating. The main aim of this event is to enhance the intercultural relations of Greece with the world, but also enrich its cultural traditions and customs in an era where national identity is fading away. Within the framework of the festival, folk traditional dancing in traditional costumes as well as dance classes will be held.
The event is part of a newly introduced polymorphic series of festivals which are opening with a festival devoted to Books and New writers in the beginning of June and closing with the Festival of Amateur Theater in September.
While in Olympia, do not miss the opportunity to visit the local sights and small villages which are of heavy significance and historical value.
Entrance to the festivals is free for all guests.
