Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival 2023

Mar 02, 2023 — Mar 12, 2023 • Category: Events

Founded in 1999, the International Documentary Festival of Thessaloniki has managed to be numbered among the biggest documentary festivals across the world. In fact, since 2018, the documentary that will win first place in the festival qualifies for participation in the Oscars!

The 25th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival will be held between March 2nd and March 12th, 2023. It will take place in physical spaces & stages, but also on the web. This event will host 60 short and full-length movie documentaries in total, including films in three different competition sections, plus films outside the competition.

The festival will rent out every Greek documentary portrayed during this 10-day event in an attempt to support the local indie film industry. As a yearly tradition, there will be open-to-all screenings, like this year’s Filippos Koutsaftis’ Mourning Rock documentary.

Always touching on sensitive subjects of the respective times, the 25th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival is full of emotional scenes portraying gendered issues, women empowerment, and significant Greek events of the recent past, all of which have been selected by the dedicated team of the director Nikos Ziogas, film expert Yianna Sarri, and Thessaloniki journalist Christos Katsikogiorgos.

A few examples of the documentaries that will be portrayed are Mighty Aftrin: In the Time of Floods by Angelos Rallis, Cage Survivor by Irina Boiko, and Synthetiki: A Film about Something by Vangelis Tsakas.
