Initiative for year tourism in northern Greece

Apr 01, 2016 — Apr 01, 2016 • Category: Events

The issue of year round tourism in Greece is an old field of discussion among tourist authorities and a strong desire for the Greek State. Recently five chambers have decided to meet and take initiatives to promote the region of Northern Greece as a year round tourist destination.
The American-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce, the British-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce, the French-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Hellenic-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Italian-Hellenic Chamber of Thessaloniki are co-organizing the first International Tourism Conference to take place on April 1st, 2016, at the Flat Hall of Thessaloniki Concert Hall.
This joint initiative is titled Northern Greece: 365 Days of Tourism and the aim is to exchange knowhow, highlight current trends in global tourism and set up ways to establish Northern Greece as a leading tourist option.
The organizers point out that although Halkidiki has all the facilities to welcome tourists all year round, it still operates on six-month basis. The case of Thessaloniki will also be discussed as the city is not yet receiving the respective number of tourists that other cities with long history, monuments and rich cultural identity receive.
Another issue to be talked about is road tourism which has become difficult due to the ongoing refugee crisis and the recent border controls.
