The port of Thessaloniki used to serve ferries to islands of North Eastern Aegean and Sporades, but these ferries have now stopped. They do not operate any more.

Thessaloniki is located 500 km north of Athens. The modern National Highway Athens-Thessaloniki and the Egnatia Odos that crosses all northern Greece makes it easy to drive to Thessaloniki. It takes about 5 hours to drive from Athens to Thessaloniki and three hours from Igoumenitsa to Thessaloniki.

There are frequent daily buses from Athens to Thessaloniki. They depart from Kifissos KTEL Station in Athens and arrive in Macedonia KTEL Station in Thessaloniki. There are also buses to Thessaloniki from almost all large towns in Greece. Buses to the close resorts of Halkidiki depart from Halkidiki Bus Station, close to the airport of Thessaloniki.

There are frequent trains from Athens to Thessaloniki. These trains depart from Larissis Train Station in Athens and they can be regular or express. There are also trains from Thessaloniki to Alexandroupolis and few towns in western Macedonia, such as Platy Imathias and Florina. There are also trains to Thessaloniki from many Balkan countries. The bronze statue of Alexander the Great on his famous horse Bucephalus, located at the waterfront (Nea Paralia) of Thessaloniki. The monument was sculptured by Evangellos Moustakas in 1974 and with 6.15m in height, it is the largest statue in Greece.
