Zakynthos Vacations

Vacation in Zakynthos offers innumerable options for enjoying a fine holiday in one of the most magnificent islands of the Ionian Sea. With beautiful beaches, underwater caves, mountainous villages and remnants of the intriguing past, Zakynthos has it all! It comes as no surprise that the island has grown to be one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece over the last decades.

More and more people choose Zakynthos for their summer vacations and come to relax under the hot Greek sun. The amazing beaches, the crystal waters, the traditional villages of the countryside and the hospitality of the locals are the basic elements for your unique vacation. The best time to visit the island is from May to September, as due to the season all businesses are open and the weather allows all types of activities.

The most photographed spot on the island and one of the top things to see in Zakynthos is Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach, located on the northwestern side of the island and reachable by boat from several points. This beach stands out for the crystal water and the old rusted ship that lays on shore.

The eastern side of the island is the most developed in terms of tourism, hosting hundreds of options for accommodation. The most popular resorts in Zakynthos are Laganas, Tsilivi, Argassi, Agios Nikolaos and Vassilikos. The beaches are home to many tourist facilities, allowing guests to participate in plenty of water sports. They are also surrounded by hotels and rooms to let.

Geography-wise, the island has a diverse terrain of fertile plains on the southeastern part that dips gently into the Ionian Sea, while the western part has two mountainous promontories that plunge into the coastlines, dotted with peaceful bays and golden beaches. The northern part of the island is also cloaked with pine-covered mountains and hills. The combination of the mild Mediterranean climate and copious winter rainfall has blessed the island with a dense green cover.

A spectacular series of geological formations, the caves around the coastline are natural arches formed by centuries of erosion that have created an outstandingly beautiful seascape. The water has a deep blue tone, particularly in the deepest caves and in the bright morning light, everything, including the keel of the boat and the swimmers, appears as though they have been painted in deep shades of blue. Those are called Blue Caves and one can visit them during an excursion to Navagio Beach.

If you happen to be a wildlife enthusiast, then do skip meeting Caretta-Caretta, the famous loggerhead sea turtle known for its endangered status. Native to the Mediterranean, these turtles use some of the beaches on the Greek Islands as their nesting grounds, and the Greek government has adopted several measures to protect these creatures.
The National Marine Park established on the uninhabited islet of Marathonisi (just off the coast of Limni Keriou) is another noteworthy place of interest. With its beautiful white sandy beach and crystal clear waters shaded by lush vegetation, the islet is a protected area for the Caretta Caretta and it is certainly worth including in your list of places to visit on your Zakynthos vacation.
