Zakynthos is inhabited since the prehistoric years and is often referred in the epics of Homer. The Zakynthian culture was strongly influenced by the Romans and other civilizations who settled there but it flourished greatly during the Venetian period. Zakynthos is home to various museums and first on this list is the Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos housed in one of the oldest buildings, in Solomos square. The rich collection consists of Byzantine icons, frescoes made by Cretan artists and other impressive sculpture works from the 16th century.

Solomos Museum opened its doors to visitors in 1959 presenting many items from the personal collection of Dionysios Solomos, the renowned Greek poet, as well as works of other literate men. The museum's exhibition focuses on other forms of art and among them are paintings, musical instruments, ceramics, and sculpture works. Next to Solomos Museum is the Municipal Library with interesting manuscripts from the 18th century.

Some kilometers outside the capital of Zakynthos you will meet the Helmis Natural Museum which aims to provide insight and ways to protect the island's ecosystem. Visitors can see a nice collection o rare animal species.

The naval history of Zakynthos from the 18th century to modern times is beautifully portrayed in the Naval Museum located in Tsivili, through a nice exhibition including ship models, books and traditional machinery. Zakynthos is the birthplace of many artists, among them Grigorios Xenopoulos, one of the most famous playwriters in Greece. The two-storey house, where the writer spent his childhood, is now a museum that displays his personal belongings.

Post Byzantine Art Museum

The Post Byzantine Art Museum of Zakynthos Town is housed in the large building of Solomos Square, the largest square of the town. It exhibits valuable icons, ecclesiastical clothing, frescoes from the 16th-19th century and papers and photos of Zakynthos before the earthquake of 1953.

This museum is located is Agios Markos Square and it is dedicated to the poet Dionysios Solomos and other eminent Zakynthians. A collection of manuscripts, portaits, personal clothes and busts of famous Zakynthians are housed inside as well as the mausoleums of two important Greek poets, Solomos and Kalvos.

This museum is dedicated to Gregorios Xenopoulos, a famous Greek playwriter born in Zakynthos. It is housed in the ancestral mansion of the writer and it houses his manuscripts, photos and personal items.

Exhibition Center of Caretta Caretta
Location: Dafni

The Exhibition Center of the Sea Turtle Caretta Caretta is located in the region of Dafni, an area that belongs to the National Marine Park of Zakynthos. The center was established in 2006 and aims to inform visitors on the protection of the caretta caretta.

Location: Agia Marina

The Helmis Museum of Natural History is located in the mountainous village of Agia Marina, in the centre of Zakynthos. It was established in 2000 by a private initiative and aims to present the rare flora, fauna and sealife of the island.

Location: Tsilivi

The Naval Museum of Tsilivi includes aquarelles which present the history of the Greek Navy from the 18th century till today, ship models, nautical uniforms, books and photographs.

Agricultural Museum
Location: Katastari

In the village of Pigadakia, 2 km from Katastari, there is a small cultural and agricultural museum. Established in 1998, this museum exhibits the life of a traditional Greek village.
