Zakynthos Island is located to the west of the Greek mainland and lies northwest of the Peloponnese. It belongs to the Ionian cluster of islands, which is why its history and culture has been largely influenced by Italy. The third largest Ionian island, its total land surface area is 410 sq km. The length of the coastline is about 123 km and this island has some of the finest beaches in the country. The total length of Zakynthos across the centre is 40 km and its width is 20 km.

The geography of Zakynthos includes rocky and steep mountains on the west and fertile plains on the southeastern part. The tallest peak is Vrachionas, rising at an altitude of 758 meters. Due to the mountainous areas, the western portion of the island has been left untouched and boasts of beautiful natural habitats. The south eastern portion consists of vast areas with lush vegetation and this is the most tourist developed part of Zakynthos island.

Though there are no rivers on the island, the soil is quite fertile and has rich amount of carbonic calcium. Zakynthos also has several arches and cliffs stretching out into the sea at various points. Zakynthos has many beaches with exceptional panoramic beauty.

The most famous beach on the island is known as the Shipwreck Beach, with exceptional white sand and the remains of a ship on shore. The soft sand of the beaches on Zakynthos create the perfect conditions for the Mediterranean sea turtle Caretta Caretta to lay its eggs. They usually go to the beaches of Laganas and Tsilivi. Popular breeding places for the caretta-caretta are also two small islets on the southern side of Zakynthos, Pelouzo and Marathonisi.
