The Monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa in Zakynthos was built on the peak of a mountain, on top of an ancient temple dedicated to the Olympian goddess Artemis. Marble fragments of the temple were used to build the entrance gate and decorate the interior of the church. The old monastery dates back to the 15th century and has been built according to the Byzantine style.
The road you need to take to get up there is rocky and quite unpleasant but the panoramic view combined with a landscape full of ruins is rewarding enough.
