Agia Mavra among the Byzantine Museums

The mayor of Artemisia Municipality on Zakynthos announced the inclusion of the Holy Temple of Agia Mavra among the Byzantine Museums of the island, so that it will be easier to find a way for financing its restoration. As the mayor stressed out, the main source of income for the temple is the money collected by donations of pilgrims, but this is not enough for the restoration of the church, which is estimated to cost about 450,000 euros. Agia Mavra, the oldest church on the island, constructed in the Byzantine style, stands in Macherado village and pilgrims have been increased since its restoration need became known. People come to admire its valuable Byzantine icons, the wall frescoes and the wooden icon screen.
