Giostra di Zante Carnival 2010

As the Carnival approaches, festivities and events are organized all over Greece. In Zakynthos, particularly, the tradition of Giostra has revived over the last years and it is presented on the last weekend of the Carnival. The association "Giostra di Zante" will welcome this year representative groups from Italy, Slovakia and San Marino, making this event international. The president of this association also mentioned that this year the Mayor of the Italian town Sulmona will visit Zakynthos. "Giostra has become a tradition", he said. "Historians and travellers report that Giostra was the largest event of the year. This is what we try to do today. I believe that Giostra of Zakynthos is gradually getting an international aspect, as many European countries participate every year. At this Carnival, the Italians will present a show with flags, the Slovakians will make a show with fire and San Marino will present its traditional music and dancing". Schedule of Giostra: Friday, February 12th, 19.30: The offical beginning of Giostra in Saint Mark's Square with Medieval happenings Saturday, February 13th, 11.00: A parade will start from the Square of Agioi Saranda to the Square of Saint Mark, where Giostra will be declared Saturday, February 13th, 15.00: Parade from Agios Pavlos hill to Solomos Square where the big contest will take place, with the participation of nine knights this year
