Location: Argostoli

The Municipal Theatre of Kefalonia, also known as Kefalos Theater, is located in Argostoli, just opposite the Archaeological Museum and at the end of Lithostroto (Pebble) Street. This beautiful theatre is one of the largest and oldest in Greece. It looks impressive with its neoclassical architecture and a spacious yard in front of it. It was inaugurated in 1858 when all the Ionian islands were under British rule. In fact, the first performance to take place there was the famous opera La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi.

Ever since, it became an important cultural center for the presentation of operas and operettas in Greece until after the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922), when it was used to house refugees. During the Second World War, it was also bombed by the Germans. Subsequently, it collapsed during the 1953 earthquake and was finally restored long after that, in the 1990s. Today, the Municipal Theatre of Kefalonia hosts many theatrical plays, dance performances, scientific conferences and artistic exhibitions. It comprises a large amphitheater with a capacity of 450 people and a few smaller rooms.
