Corfu Mandouki

The neighbourhood of Mandouki in Corfu Greece, Ionian: Mandouki is one of the most traditional suburbs of Corfu town. It is placed between the monastery of Panagia Platytera and the port, just 500m far from Saroko square. Mandouki is one of the most historic neighbourhoods of the island, as most of its houses were built in the 17th and the 18th century in the traditional Venetian architecture.

As Mandouki is close to the port, its inhabitants were the first to be attacked by the pirates and enemies that threatened Corfu. That is exactly what happened in 1799, when the island was attacked by the French. The people of Mandouki locked themselves in the Monastery of Panagia Platytera and fought against the conquerors. Unfortunately, the French defeated them and burnt the monastery, killing most of the inhabitants inside it.

Mandouki is today a beautiful and picturesque suburb. It is crossed by a narrow central road and the rest of the paths are stone and paved. Along the street, there are some restaurants, cafeterias and gift shops. Mandouki is known as the suburb that has maintained the most the characteristic lyric accent of the Corfiot people. There you can see the beautiful church of Panagia and the church of Agios Ioannis, built two centuries ago and still working today.
