Like in all parts of Greece, Thassos island celebrates a lot of religious and cultural festivals all over the year. The major festivals which have a religious character are characterized for their abundance of local products which are offered to the people.
Religious feasts & festivals
The largest celebration in Thassos is the feast day of the Assumption of the Virgin, on the 15th of August, in Panagia village. After the litany of the icon of the Virgin which is accompanied by the local band, everyone gathers at the village square to eat and drink.
On the 27th of July, locals celebrate the feast day of Agios Panteleimon.
The Festival of Ancient Drama takes place in the Ancient Theatre of Limenas, Thassos. Various concerts and ancient Greek plays are presented in July and August.
The carnival of Thassos is famous for the revival of old pagan customs. People are dressed in fancy costumes and dance all together in the village square.
