The Archaeological Museum of Vathi in Samos, Eastern Aegean: The Archaeological Museum of Vathi, the capital of Samos, is housed in two different buildings: an old building that is known as the Paschaleios Archaiofilakio (storehouse of ancient objects) built in 1912 and a modern building of 1987, constructed with the expenses of the car company Volkswagen. This modern building hosts a large collection of Archaic sculpture.

This museum host exhibits that were found in excavations all around Samos. The most impressive exhibit is a gigantic kouros (male) statue 5,5 m high. There are also other statues and friezes depicting scenes from mythology or daily life, pieces of pottery, small statues, tools of daily use and some weaponry.

    Closed on Tuesday
    We’ve been driving 1,5 hours to visit the museum. Getting to the museum isn’t easy by car. We had to walk quite far in the heat, only to find out it is closed on Tuesday. Doesn’t seem very logical…
