Five illegal immigrants, including three children, got drown when their boat capsized off the coast of Lesvos two days ago, on August 14. A rescue team consisting of a rescue helicopter, coast guard patrol boats and a navy torpedo boat, with the help of local fishing boats, managed to save 33 people from the water during the pre-dawn operation. The authorities received a call from a man claiming to be an Afghan who reported that a boat with immigrants, which had set off from some Turkish port, was experiencing engine trouble off the coast of Lesvos. This accident seems to be one of this year’s greatest tragedies.
