Pilchard and Octopus Festivals

The municipality of Gera on Lesvos island organizes once more the established Pilchard Festival on August 7th in Pyrgi village and an Octopus Festival on August 12th in Perama village. These two festivals take place every year in the area to honour the local fishermen, as Lesvos and in particular the gulf of Gera is included among the most fish productive regions in Greece. Many vivarium have been established along the island and fishing supports a large part of Lesvos economy. The festivals will have grilled fish, ouzo (the second most famous local product of Lesvos, after fresh fish), traditional live music and dance till the early hours. Perama is situated about 20 km to the south west of Mytilene, the capital of Lesvos, and Pyrgi about 5 km after Perama.
