Kournos Festival 2024
The fourth annual Kournos Festival is set to take place throughout the island of Lemnos from the 1st to the 19th of August 2024. Established in 2021, Kournos aims to bring together the island’s inhabitants and visitors with a myriad of artistic performances showcasing the unique identity of Lemnos. Performances will take place in several different locations, from a movie theater to ancient landmarks and archaeological sites.
The central theme of this year’s festival is the island’s diverse animal population. All performances included in the festival’s program were specifically designed around this idea, taking inspiration from the island’s rich fauna. In collaboration with the Mediterranean Institute for Nature and Anthropos (MedINA), Kournos aims to pay tribute to Lemnos’ stock-farming traditions, ornithological wealth, and large biodiversity.
The world-renowned puppeteer Renaud Herbin is set to perform under the banner of the Kournos Festival, along with a group of local musicians, for an interactive musical theater performance. The award-winning composer Ismini Beck will helm a musical cantata titled Tyto Alba, named after a local species of owl, with narration from Giannis Angelakas and accompanying piano by Stefanos Thomopoulos. The festival also presents the opera Il Re Pastore by Christoph Willald Gloucester, a new song and dance performance by Antonis Vais, and a screening of the seminal anti-war film “Ouranos” directed by Takis Kanellopoulos. Those interested can attend all performances free of charge.
