Works for restoration of Ancient Kameiros
• Category: News
After the great fire of 2008 that threatened the archaeological site of Ancient Kameiros, Rhodes, the Ministry of Culture ordered a study for the reconstruction of this site that remains abandoned for almost three decades. Kameiros was one of the three most powerful cities of Rhodes in the ancient times, along with Lindos and Ialyssos. Today, it is one of the most frequented sites in Rhodes, however today its situation doesn't look like as a proper site.
This is why, two days ago, the Central Archaeological Board decided the reconstruction of the area with a new entrance, new fencing (1,100 m) around the archaeological site, a gift shop, wooden seats, new signalling and lighting. The ancient town of Kameiros is constructed on three levels: the Acropolis on a hill, the hellenistic and roman town in the middle and the Agora on the lowest level. It was excavated in the early 20th century during the Italian rule and unfortunately not much has been done since then for its restoration.
