The Medieval Rose Festival gives visitors the chance to participate in the Witches and Fairies Dance, watch the enthralling tricks of fire eaters, jugglers and jesters, or just enjoy scrumptious banquets. Conducted by the Medieval Rose, a non-governmental and nonprofit organization, it aims to recreate the magic of the Middle Ages and preserve the cultural heritage of Rhodes. This unique event was established in 2006 and has since evolved into one of the most popular annual happenings on the island. It usually takes place in May and lasts for several days.
Organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Rhodes and the Prefecture of the Dodecanese, it is held in the medieval town of Rhodes, which was declared a world cultural and architectural heritage site by UNESCO in 1992. Complete with a formidable wall and a moat, this is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe, making the experience even more real. The organizing committee consists of historians, archaeologists, musicians, actors, visual artists, actors and craftsmen, all trying to make the festival as authentic as possible. Many volunteers also participate, and every guest who enters the town is invited to take part, dressed in the medieval style (costumes can be provided by the festival’s wardrobe).
The Festival officially takes off with the third sounding of the trumpet and the parade of the Order of the Knights, with cavalry, infantry and the remaining entourage, from the Palace of the Grand Master along the Street of the Knights. The entire town is done up as it would have been during the Middle Ages, complete with wooden stalls selling traditional dishes and handicrafts, exhibitions, puppet theaters and chess contests, as well as entertaining dance and music performances by Greek and international artists. Jousting tournaments, sword fighting demonstrations and archery competitions are also included in the program, showcasing the medieval combat skills of the Knights of Saint John.
Reenactments are one of the festival’s highlights, bringing to life major historical events like the Siege of Rhodes by the Ottoman fleet in 1522 and providing an unforgettable immersive experience. These events and activities are complemented by informative workshops and lectures, presenting visitors with the opportunity to discover medieval history and art and interact with experts in the field.
Overall, the festival is a wonderful opportunity for the entire family to have fun, and, at the same time, learn a lot about the rich history that shaped this enchanting medieval town.
