Hippocratia Festival 2023

The Hippocratia is the most important cultural festival in Kos, preserving the island’s traditions and customs to this day. It is organized in honor of Hippocrates, one of the most prominent figures in medical history, who was born on the island. It takes place every year, usually starting in June and lasting until October, but the exact dates are subject to change. It has become an attraction for culture and art lovers, both locals and visitors!

During the festival, visitors have the opportunity to attend an array of cultural events and activities, including concerts, theatrical plays, art exhibitions, presentations, traditional dance performances, sports events and religious festivities. In addition, it consists of several other smaller festivals, such as the honey festival of Antimachia and the classical music festival. Many activities suitable for children are also available. The is not a specific venue for the whole festival, but it depends on the characteristics of each event. They are often organized in collaboration with other cultural and educational institutions on the island.

One of the most important happenings is the recreation of the Hippocratic Oath in the Asklepieion of Kos, built during ancient times to honor Asclepius, the god of medicine. There, medical school graduates take the oath to serve the community following an ethical code, without discrimination.
