The 15th of August is an important date for the Greek calendar and the whole country celebrates the religious “Dekapendavgousto” for the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Kos is the perfect island not only to spend your summer vacation but also to celebrate the Assumption Day! The day before -14th of August- the local women make several different sweets for the Virgin Mary.
The day’s specialty? “Katines”, handmade cheese pies with onion, egg and red cheese, a special cheese preserved in red wine.
The ladies of every household will also bake bread called “eftazimo” which they will serve in small square pieces at the festive table the next day, on the 15th of August. The feast lasts the whole day accompanied with traditional food, wine, and music!
