Kos Vacations

Kos, the island of Hippocrates, is one of the most beautiful holiday destinations in the Dodecanese islands with its luxury hotels, sparkling beaches, rich history, and mountainous villages. In fact, Kos was one of the first Greek islands to develop tourist infrastructure and open to package tourism. Located on the southeastern side of the Aegean, Kos belongs to the Dodecanese complex and it is situated close to another famous Greek island, Rhodes.

Many visitors choose to spend their summer vacations in Kos, making this island among the most popular holiday destinations in Greece. Kos Town is the largest and busiest place on the island, an amazing spot to enjoy sightseeing and nightlife during your Kos vacation. A large Venetian Castle, constructed in the Medieval times by the Knights of Saint John, stands next to the port, as it used to protect the whole island from enemy attacks and pirate invasions. The waterfront of the town is lined by fish restaurants and the fishing boats at the port create a lovely environment.

The center of Kos Town distinguishes for its architecture, with the modern, the Ottoman and the Venetian elements. As the island was long conquered by many cultures, you will see monuments of different eras during your Kos vacation, from ancient temples, Roman houses and Venetian castles to Ottoman mosques. The most interesting site in Kos will certainly be the Asklepieion, an ancient healing center a couple of km away from the capital town. In fact, the father of medicine, Hippocrates, studied the secrets of biology in that center.

Your Kos vacations will also be marked by the beautiful coasts of the island. Starting from the organized beaches of the north to some remote coves in the south, Kos vacation will certainly give you relaxing moments on soft sand, under the hot Greek sun. Mastihari, Lambi, Thermes, Kefalos, Tigaki, and Marmari are among the best beaches to enjoy in your Kos vacation. Partly organized and partly secluded, these beaches have amazing crystal water and offer lots of tourist facilities, including active watersports. In fact, in Mastihari visitors can practice windsurfing due to the strong wind that blows in the afternoon there.

Driving through the island can also give visitors a nice aspect of the island. Kos is not only about beaches and active nightlife in Kardamena. Your holidays can be great in the inland, too, where traditional villages are surrounded by lush greenery and rural life is at its best. Kos is also ideal for a variety of excursions. Visitors can join an organized island tour, or a jeep safari to discover some of the most interesting places there.

Also, Kos tourism can be enriched with daily excursions to other islands of Dodecanese, In particular, excursion boats leave from Kardamena Kos to Nisyros for a daily visit to the volcano, still active today and one of the most famous volcanoes in the Aegean Sea. Another island to visit is also Patmos, daily linked to Kos through the port of Mastihari. Daily excursion boats also depart from Kos Town and go the Bodrum, on the neighboring coasts of Turkey.
