Region of eco development

Following a ministerial decision signed by the Minister of Environment and Public Works, Mr Souflias, the terrestial and marine area between Karpathos and the islet of Saria has been declared as a region of eco-development. This region covers 53,000 sq.m. of sea and 102,000 sq.m. of land and restrictions to certain activities there have been imposed. The area is also important as rare marine ecosystems develop there and the endangered species of Meditarranean seal Monachus-Monachus lives and reproduces in theser waters. In fact, to point out the risk of extinction of the Mediterranean seal, there is a centre of information for their life and reproduction in the Province House of Karpathos in Pothia.
