Located in the seaside village of Vlychadia, the Valsamidis Sea World Museum houses the remarkable private collection created by sponge diver Stavros Valsamidis over more than 40 years of exploring the rich underwater world of Kalymnos.

The museum boasts a wide assortment of many different kinds of corals and sponges, some of which stand out for their size, as well as truly magnificent shells that never fail to impress with their extraordinary palette of colors. Moreover, there are various embalmed animals, including sharks, rays, swordfish, starfish and a huge sea turtle.

The highlight is the wreck of an entire ancient merchant ship displayed alongside amphorae, coins and other objects. Another exhibit that catches the eye is an enigmatic statuette depicting a Syrian god who has a human body and a cat’s head. As this item bears no connection to ancient Greek history, it can be assumed that it was stolen by pirates, who threw it into the sea after removing the precious stones that probably adorned its eyes. Visitors will also have the chance to see findings from the mysterious sunken city of Telendos island, as well as from the First and the Second World War.

Given Kalymnos’ long-standing tradition in sponge diving, this is something which could not have failed to be part of the museum; in fact, there are over 2,000 photographs piecing together the history of sponge diving on the island.

If you happen to find the museum closed during its working hours, do not be disheartened; just head to the adjacent tavern. It is run by Stavros Valsamidis’ son, the current owner of the museum, who will gladly show you in.
