Location: Pothia Town

The Church of Savior Christ is located in Pothia, about 800 meters from the port. Also known as the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ, it was established in 1861 and has dominated the town since then. The Church holds great cultural and historical value and operates as the town’s religious center to this day.

The picturesque church features a beautiful paved courtyard and an imposing clock tower that makes it instantly recognizable. Having been designed by a group of local artists and architects, it stands as a shining beacon of the island’s architectural identity. Inside, an impressive iconostasis is housed, made by sculptor Yannoulis Chapelas. The walls are adorned with a collection of vibrant frescoes and wonderful paintings, created by local artists such as G. Alachouzos and S. Magklis.

The Church of Savior Christ is deeply connected to the history of the island. In 1884, an assembly was held on the grounds of the church so regulations could be put in place regarding the sponge diving industry. What followed was the implementation of commercial and employment laws that were unprecedented for their time. Because of its unique cultural significance, the church has been recognized as a historical monument.
