Also known as Kapari on account of the capers that grow abundantly among the rocks, Pserimos is one of the smallest islands in the Dodecanese and lies southeast of Kalymnos, to which it administratively belongs. Untouched by mass tourism, it is a hidden gem that lends itself to serene holidays by the sea, as well as for a short day trip from Kalymnos and Kos.
The terrain is mostly rocky, with a succession of low hills and small valleys planted with olive groves. The northernmost edge is called Akra Vassiliki and the southernmost Akra Roussa, while between them there are several secluded coves with heavenly beaches. Scented with the aroma of thyme, sage and oregano, the landscape is completely pristine and has been declared a NATURA 2000 protected area for the preservation of the rare bird species it is home to.
Over the years, its population has decreased and now Pserimos counts about 30 permanent residents, all of whom are concentrated in Avlakia, the island’s only settlement. Standing on the ruins of an ancient town, Avlakia is a picturesque little harbor where you will find a few rental rooms and a souvenir shop, as well as a couple of excellent taverns serving local recipes often made with home-grown products. Wandering around the area, you will come across the remnants of ancient houses, while fragments of Hellenistic pottery still lie scattered around among the sand.
Undoubtedly, the best thing to do in Pserimos is to explore its dazzling beaches. The only organized one you will find stretches right in front of Avlakia, while, around the island, there are plenty more completely secluded sandy or pebbly coves with sparkling azure waters, where you can enjoy the breathtaking sea views in complete privacy. To get there, you will need to hike along the island’s relatively easy rocky trails, but you may also be able to access some of them by boat, as the locals will be more than happy to take you there.
If you choose to spend a few days in Pserimos, you can also go on a day trip to the nearby Platy islet, which boasts some of the most unspoiled beaches in the Dodecanese, as well as a few submerged wrecks that make it ideal for scuba diving.
Tip: Don’t forget to bring along some cash from Kalymnos, as there no ATMs in Pserimos.
