The Chapel of Prophet Elias lies in the center of Kalymnos, atop the highest mountain peak on the island, the homonymous peak of Prophet Elias. At an altitude of 760 meters, the chapel is afforded breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes and the vast blue of the Aegean, the likes of which you will not find anywhere else on the island. During the late afternoon hours, the area also sees one of the most gorgeous sunsets, as the warm colors of the sun descend upon the glistening waters of the endless sea.
The chapel itself has a white exterior with some light blue features. It only has one room, where a small collection of religious icons and a spot where you can light a candle are housed. A celebration is held annually on the 10th of July dedicated to the memory of Prophet Elias. On the eve of the celebration, locals visit the chapel to pray to the Prophet and attend that day’s vespers.
The hike up to the chapel can prove somewhat challenging but is worth the effort for the scenic beauty provided by its advantageous location. The route starts from the nearby village of Chorio and ascends the western slopes of the Lagada stream, passing west of the Castle of Chora. The path continues uphill on Patela mountain and then directs you southeast to the summit of Prophet Elias. The whole trip should take you no longer than 1 hour and 30 minutes and it is advisable to come well-prepared with necessities such as food and water.
