The Church of Panagia Kecharitomeni is located in the heart of Chorio, the island’s former capital. Constructed in 1794, it has been an important religious center for the area for many centuries. For its construction, materials from the Temple of Delian Apollo were used such as columns, reliefs, and inscriptions.
The Church is distinguished for its striking white exterior and rather impressive bell tower. A collection of gorgeous religious icons and Byzantine mosaics is found inside, including an old icon of the Virgin Mary. A stunning carved and gold-plated iconostasis dominates the interior, providing a beautiful atmosphere that is sure to leave visitors awe-struck. The Church celebrates every year on August 15th in celebration of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.
