Whether you’re a rock climbing enthusiast or not, the Grande Grotta is a must. Often considered one of the most stunning natural wonders in the entire country, it is, as its name indicates, an imposing cavern of reddish limestone reaching 50 meters in height and as much as 200 in width! Its Italian name has been influenced by the world-famous Grotta Gigante in northeastern Italy and was given to it in the early 20th century by the Italians, who ruled the Dodecanese between 1911 and 1946.
The Grande Grotta has evolved into one of the top rock climbing destinations worldwide and has been divided into three climbing sectors: the central Grande Grotta, Panorama and Apogevma (meaning Afternoon). Each of these sectors offers routes of varying difficulty levels, making the experience accessible to everyone, regardless of previous experience. Apogevma, in particular, owes its name to the fact that it remains sheltered from the sun till the afternoon, which can make an enormous difference on hot summer days.
However, even if you’re not into extreme sports, hiking up to the cave will give you a unique chance to marvel at the huge stalactites hanging from the roof, as well as at the unparalleled views of Telendos and the sparkling azure sea. It is precisely these views that make this one of the most photogenic spots on the island, especially as the sun gradually sets behind Telendos, dyeing the sky with flaming red and orange hues that contrast with the azure of the sea.
