Kalymnos Sponges

Kalymnos is often referred to as the Sponge Diver’s Island, having been the center of sponge harvest and trade in Greece for centuries. Since ancient times, the life and culture of Kalymnos have been linked to sponges, also known as the Kalymninan Gold. The usage of sponges was first mentioned in the works of Aristotle and Homer.

Sponge diving has always been a common occupation of Kalymnians and sponges have long been the main source of income, bringing wealth and fame to the island. The first Kalymnian sponge divers used no uniform and relied mostly on their ability to hold their breath underwater. They would also implement the use of what was known as the skandalopetra, a flat stone that helped them sink to the seafloor quickly. New technological advancements, such as the introduction of a diving suit called the skafandro, allowed spongers to dive in greater depths and stay underwater for longer periods.

However, these otherwise positive changes led to the emergence of decompression sickness, also known as the divers' disease, which plagued the island for decades. Kalymnos remained the most prominent sponge trade center for centuries, up until the mid-1980s when most of the sponges in the Mediterranean were found to be infected by pollution. This mass destruction of sponges led by extension to the destruction of the sponge-fishing industry.

Today, the sponges of Kalymnos remain one of the island’s most coveted products. Stroll around the picturesque alleys of Kalymnos and you will find various local shops specializing in sponge making. A sponge factory is found at Pothia, welcoming anyone interested in learning more about the island's background.

An annual celebration known as Sponge Week takes place on the island the week after Easter. Honoring the centuries-long relationship between the people of Kalymnos and the sponge, the occasion is marked by copious singing, dancing, and enjoying local delicacies. By attending, guests will most likely have the chance to see the sponge diver's dance live!
