A tornado of great intensity struck the small island of Astypalea in Dodecanese yesterday, November 11th. It was a heavy storm that lasted for more than 10 hours and caused many damages.
The inhabitants reported that they have not faced again anything like this in the past and indeed such tornadoes are very rare in the Aegean Sea, where distances between the islands are too small to allow the formation of such phenomena.
The storm started at about 09:00 am and a whirlwind was formed that uprooted trees, destroyed house roofs and flooded many other houses in various regions of the island. According to the local weather station, the intensity of the rainfall reached 86 millimeters.
