Tinos Exomvourgo (Xombourgo)

Reaching an altitude of approximately 640 meters above sea level, Exomvourgo (or Xombourgo) is an imposing, rugged mountain that dominates the southern part of Tinos. Surrounded by a plethora of traditional villages, like Tripotamos, Koumaros or Xynara, it offers a network of fascinating hiking trails that lead to the various settlements and rewards visitors with truly breathtaking views. Indeed, from the huge cross on top of the mountain, it is possible to see not only the inland and the impressive rock formations of Volax but also an astounding number of Cycladic islands, as far as Naxos, Serifos and Kythnos!

In ancient times, it was the site of the island’s administrative center, with the earliest traces of human habitation dating from the Bronze Age. Near the southern foothills, archaeological research has brought to light ruins dating from the Greek Dark Ages and the classical period, while walls belonging to an earlier Ionian city can still be discerned southwest of Exomvourgo. Though it was subsequently abandoned for several centuries, a strong castle was erected there during the Byzantine era, when pirate raids forced the people of Tinos to move away from the shore. Exomvourgo Castle was later reinforced by the Venetian rulers and played a key role in the island’s defense against the Ottomans.

Today, besides the ruins of the castle and the ancient cities, visitors can see a Catholic church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Standing on the mountain slopes, it was built by Jesuit monks after the destruction of the fort in 1715, and is now a site of pilgrimage, attracting visitors from all over the world. At the same time, Exomvourgo is a true heaven for rock climbing enthusiasts, with several rock climbing sectors being already available.
