Sifnos Architecture

Sifnos meets the perfect form of Cycladic architecture with many cubic houses scattered around the island. The traditional settlements of Sifnos are characterized by their rich diversity. The most distinctive form of architecture can be seen in the village of Kastro with its strong defensive character and uniqueness.

Throughout the ages, the medieval settlement remains intact and preserves its main features like the narrow labyrinth streets, small yards, and the Venetian style houses. The village consists of mansions and houses with one or two rooms built very close to each other, the dark arches, low stair paths, and the marble shrines compose the magical scene of Kastro.

The rest of the traditional settlements with the whitewashed houses, cobbled streets, picturesque churches, and the blue domes are designed according to the principles of Cycladic architecture. These areas reflect the simple way of life and the historical evolution of Sifnos. The richness and variety of Sifnos architecture are apparent in the beautiful surrounding and well-preserved buildings.

The main town characterizes for the abundance of churches which are perfectly harmonized with the rest of the marvelous house layout. North of Apollonia lies the village of Artemonas from where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Sifnos, among the most picturesque Greek islands. Apart from the Neoclassical mansions, there are beautiful churches. The white traditional dovecotes add a final touch to the beautiful picture of Sifnos island. Of high interest are the surviving towers of Sifnos, particularly the ruined towers in Exambela and Katavati built between 4th and 6th century BC.
