Location: Megalochori

Galatea's Potter Art Shop in Megalochori specializes in handmade pottery, for both functional and decorative uses. Run by Galatea, a young potter whose work has been inspired by nature, the art shop has a varied collection of plates, platters, vases, mugs, tiles, bowls lamp shades, motifs and sets, in earthy designs and vibrant tones of the earth, the sky and the sea.

The shop also sells reproductions of the ancient paintings of Akrotiri. The artistic wall paintings that were uncovered from the Bronze age city, which is believed to have flourished about 36 centuries ago, reveals evidence of rich urban architecture, ships, the natural environment prevalent at the time, as well as jewelry and clothes worn by the Bronze age settlers.

The local painters used mineral pigments. They obtained the red color from ferrous earth and iron ore (hematite), while the white was from lime plaster and yellow from yellow ochre. These paintings have caught the imagination of several art lovers around the world and are beautifully reproduced at Galatea’s. Most artwork from Galatea’s can be viewed online and orders may be placed for both retail and wholesale among the items displayed. The studio undertakes shipping for displayed items and orders may also be placed for custom-made designs and colors.
