General information

Karterados in Santorini is a village just 2 km away from the town of Fira. 
The picturesque settlement of Karterados is built within a ravine. Its name originates from the word karteri, which translates to "ambuscade", probably due to the ambushes that took place during the piracy periods.

The village's existence dates back to the 17th century but reached its peak in the 19th century when sea captains built their houses there.
Until today, Karterados showcases the traditional Santorinian-Cycladic architecture, boasting white-washed cubic dwellings as well as cave houses.
An enchanting windmill sits at the central square, along with some eating establishments. In proximity to the square, one can encounter the Steps of Galeos, a neighborhood of houses built into the rock with cobbled alleys.

Overall, Karterados constitutes an ideal option for travelers hankering tranquility and serenity. On the other hand, its close distance to the capital (approximately 15 minutes on foot) allows visitors to access the lively nightlife. 

As Karterados is located in the heart of Santorini, no beach is direct to the settlement itself. Despite that, there's a beach called Karterados which is easily approached from the village and falls within the eastern coastline. Furthermore, Exo Gialos and Monolithos beaches also lie nearby the settlement.
