Santorini Weather

The weather of Santorini is much the same as for most of the Cyclades islands: hot sunny summers and dry winters with a few rainfalls.

In brief, the weather in Santorini is nice and sunny during the tourist season (from April to October) with August being the hottest month. Santorini has only a very few cloudy days before September.

January appertains to the winter season in Greece and is the coldest month in Santorini. It is cold and can be rainy and windy. The island emits tranquility since many hotels and restaurants are closed.

March comprises the beginning of spring. The weather starts to change, with the sun appearing more. When it is not cloudy or raining, the sun is enjoyable and warms the place. However, the temperatures remain low in the shadow and during the night.

April gets appreciably warmer. For that reason, April is the recommended month for hiking and discovering the sights. It is definitely not a month for enjoying the beaches, though.

May is sunny and warm in the main, but that depends on the year. May is maybe the best month to go to the island and all the Greek islands. The flights are less expensive and the hotel rates are lower. You will be able to enjoy the beaches and the bravest may even swim.

Summer is here! The weather in June is great. Not too hot and mostly sunny every day. It is a great month to enjoy the beaches, the sights, and the activities without the endless crowds. Hotels prices and flight fares are still lower than those during July and August.

July is hot and sunny. Being one of the two busiest months of the year, if you are visiting in July, you will need to book your ferry tickets and stay at least two months in advance. Note that July is a very expensive month.

August can get extremely hot. Fortunately, due to Santorini being an island, hence surrounded by the sea, a certain level of humidity will keep the night cooler. Also, many winds during that month (called Meltemia) come from the North and make the temperature cooler. August is the busiest and most crowded month. Again, like July, it is a very costly month.
