Location: Oia

The "1800" Restaurant is located in the central pedestrian street in Oia, a settlement perched high up on a cliff on the northernmost point of Santorini. Famous for its magnificent views of the volcanic caldera, the Aegean Sea and the Sunset, Oia is like a little piece of paradise in Santorini. 1800 Restaurant is housed in a captain's mansion which dates back from 1845.

The place has been carefully restored with sophisticated techniques that have successfully preserved the ambiance of a bygone era, while at the same time it manages to provide contemporary comforts which allow guests to dine indoors or outdoors with majestic views of the deep blue sea, the caldera and the island of Santorini. The place is just as suitable for a cozy dinner for two, as it is for a festive occasion with friends and family.

The cuisine is mostly traditional Greek with influences of the Mediterranean cuisine. Starting from the appetizers to main course and dessert, there is much emphasis on colors, flavors and presentation. Roasted fish, a platter of mezedes with local cheeses, grilled lamb chops accompanied with sweet-and-sour green applesauce, are some of the common dishes served at 1800 Restaurant.

Widely recognized for its quality dining, the restaurant has bagged numerous awards, including the Greek Golden Chef's Hat Award and the Gourmet Magazine Award. The owner of 1800 is an attendee of the "Sommelier" Wine Tasting course in Rome and a member of the International "Slow Food" committee. Armed with these qualifications, he has created a fine selection in his wine cellar.

The premium Santorini wines are endowed with distinct aromas and tastes and they are a perfect accompaniment to the various delicacies of the restaurant menu. A certified member of the "GreekWineResto" network, 1800 Restaurant is also the recipient of the first prize for its outstanding wine list and for its efforts to promote Greek wines. The prize was instituted by the "Ampelotopi" Wine Journal. 1800 also offers a large variety of Cuban cigars to taste along with the wine.

    Old time decoration
A walk in Oia, on the northern part of Santorini, brought me to this beautiful typical captain's house built in the middle 19th century and now restored to become the 1800 Restaurant. First of all, impressive decoration and really traditional. It is good that the owners have kept the building almost intact.

The restaurant was nicely done up to match the landscape around it. The roof garden was very tempting. The view of the blue sea that surrounds the volcanic island was stunning. I ordered a crabmeat salad appetizer followed by a lamb burger and champagne and cherry risotto. They were all superb! My warm congrats to the chef!! The service was also cordial and friendly.

We enjoyed a good local wine and got surprised that the locals produce so nice red wine! They told me that it is the volcanic soil that makes the grapes so tasty! Ah, obviously the volcano has made again its miracles!
