Koukoumavlos in Santorini
Koukoumavlos is an upscale restaurant located near the Cathedral of Fira and offers stunning views of the caldera, the sunset and the Aegean Sea.
It is housed in an old captain's house which dates back to the 16th century. Quite spacious, the captain's house offers both indoor and outdoor dining options. The two indoor dining areas are done up with antique furniture and offer a classy ambience, while the terrace has spectacular views of the volcanic caldera.
The cuisine is gourmet Mediterranean and the magnificent setting makes it a perfect location for hosting special occasions. The owner of Koukoumavlos is Nikos Pouliasis, an awarded chef. A man known for his passion for the culinary art, Nikos Pouliasis combines imagination with a sense of taste, while creating his gourmet dishes. Innovative dishes which have been artfully prepared by using the most unlikely combinations of ingredients are something one would have to expect at the Koukoumavlos. Together with his wife Johanna, the couple has succeeded in creating a fine ambience, an original cuisine and a gracious ambience to make dining at Koukoumavlos a pleasant experience.
Some of Nikos masterpieces include kataifi and grilled foie gras served with raisin paste, black grape syrup and ouzo jelly. In the main course, there is the steamed premium Alaskan cod fillet, with smoked salmon and potato mousseline, flavored with lemongrass and smoked paprika oil. Other interesting combinations include Santorinian fava served with smoked trout, salmon tartar in mandarin sauce and almonds, as well as the lobster and monkfish terrine served with anchovy caviar sour cream drenched in forest fruit tea sauce. Then there is the grilled beef fillet and potato puree topped with parmesan ice cream, bergamot and summer truffle sauce, or the crayfish dish served with white chocolate-ginger-lemon sauce. Tiramisu, a traditional Italian cake with smoked eggplant mousse spread on almonds in bitter orange sauce, is one of the many exotic desserts turned out at Koukoumavlos.
The restaurant has an exclusive wine list. Besides some of the fine Greek wines, the list also includes Australian, Californian, French, Spanish and Italian selections. The view of the restaurant is probably one of the best in the area. The place gets pretty popular, particularly in high season.
