Ancient pits ask for recognition

The major of Paros Island Mr. C. Vlachogiannis is waiting for an answer to his letter to the Greek Minister of Land Planning and Public Works G. Souflias, on the issue of the ancient pits of the Cycladic island.
Paros is known worldwide, not only for its natural environment, but also for its white marbel, the lychnite, of which many of the most famous sculpture works of Classical Greece have been made. This material was mined for many years at the ancient pits of Paros, in the area of Marathi, which have been officially declared as an archaeological site. They are one of their kind site, since nowhere else were being made underground marble mining.
However, in the last year's General Frame of Land Planning and Constant Development, the ancient pits of Paros were not included in the list with the areas of international and national range.
The major pointed out the significance of the issue and asked for the examination of the possibility the site to be recognized and added to the cultural heritage areas list of national range.
