Naxos island has been popular among both Greek and international tourists for a variety of reasons. Most of all, the island has escaped from being completely bought over by the sharks of mass tourism. Naxos vacation has a lot to offer to visitors. The island is the largest in the Cyclades group and boasts a number of beautiful beaches, great historical sites, ancient churches, marble quarries, traditional villages and charming port towns, all of which add to the allure of this Cycladic Island.
One of the first stops in your Naxos vacations is the capital town, Chora. An interesting combination of the old and the modern, the town has a close airport with frequent connections to Athens. The town harbor is also a busy point, especially for travelers proceeding to the southern islands of Cyclades. Chora has plenty to see and do. Great food, lively nightlife and shopping areas make it an interesting town to visit.
One of the most important landmarks of the island is Portara, a huge marble doorway that goes back 2,500 years. Standing on a small islet in front of the harbor, the Portara is connected to Naxos by a man-made causeway. The ancient gateway was believed to have been built as an entrance to the unfinished temple of Apollo that faces Delos, the birthplace of Apollo.
Another sightseeing in Naxos is the Old Town or Kastro, a Venetian fortress that dates back to the 13th century. Located on the highest point of the town, Kastro is surrounded by a heavily fortified town from which rises a labyrinth of streets that were believed to have helped the inhabitants of the town hold up against the Ottoman attacks. Some of the streets are narrow passageways, and in some places one has to bend to get through the other side.
Naxos also offers a great variety of beaches to suit all tastes. White sandy beaches, pebble beaches, nudist beaches, beaches with water sporting facilities, secluded beaches- there is a beach for everyone in your Naxos vacation. The sparkling clean waters of the Aegean are a perfect paradise for swimmers and most beaches offer sun loungers and umbrellas for shade.
Agios Georgios, Agia Anna, Agios Prokopios are some of the popular beaches close to Chora and make your Naxos vacation an amazing experience. Popular with families, these beaches are easily accessible from the hotels in town and they are lined with restaurants, cafes and bars. Moreover, the beach of Mikri Vigla is a perfect destination for wind surfing and kite surfing in your vacations in Naxos.
Although the island bases a large path of its economy in tourism, agriculture and cattle-breeding is also an important source for the inhabitants. If you rent a car and tour around the island in your Naxos vacation, you will see many groves and greenery. In fact, this is the greenest island of Cyclades. Also one of the highpoints of Naxos are its splendid villages scattered all over the island: over 60 of them, some mountainous, some coastal, and some in fertile valleys, but all of unsurpassed beauty, and set in some of the most picturesque and tranquil surroundings.
Surprisingly, many villages have become major attractions of Naxos tourism and it is not uncommon to see tourists making their way into some of the interior villages, which have succeeded in putting together the basic infrastructure to cater to tourist needs. Lovely cafes with amazing views, family-run taverns with tasty local cuisine and pretty shops selling local produce and handicrafts have become common thing in many of the local villages.
