Location: Town

The Monastery of Agios Ioannis Chryssostomos (John Chrysostom) lies on the hill above Grotta, 3 kilometers away from Naxos Town. Its location allows breathtaking panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the neighboring Cyclades.

The monastery was established in the early 13th century BC and is dedicated to Saint John. It has been serving as a female abbey ever since.
The fortified building exhibits the characteristics of traditional Cycladic architecture but also features medieval attributes. Mention-worthy relics include the books that Saint Nikodimos, the patron saint of Naxos, had sent to his mother, who was a nun there.

The monastery was restored during the 18th century by Andronikos Pradounas. Its interior includes a chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas, where visitors can see various icons from the Byzantine era, with the infamous silver icon of John Chrysostom that dates back to 1818 standing out.
