Location: Potamia

In a lush green valley in the region of Kato (Lower) Potamia lies the Byzantine church of Agios Mamas, dating from the mid-9th century. Saint Mamas, the protector of shepherds, was an important saint for the locals, as agriculture and cattle breeding were the prevailing income sources for Naxians.

This church is considered one of the oldest on the island and has an impressive architectural style. The roof is cross-shaped, while the interior features formidable sculptures and frescoes.

Before the Venetian occupation of the Cyclades in Medieval times, the Church of Agios Mamas served as the Orthodox Cathedral of Naxos.
After 1207, when the Venetians conquered the islands, it became a Catholic chapel.

Access to the church is achievable on foot or by car. Unfortunately, the interior is not open to the public.

Public transport: The central bus station of the island is located at the Port of Naxos. There are few buses from Chora to Potamia during the day. Line 9 reaches Potamia. Consider that time schedules might change according to the season. Check the official timetables here.
