We saw Mykonos only for a day so we couldn't have a whole idea of the island. We arrived there on a cruise in the morning and left in the evening, so we visited only Chora and also took the boat to Paradise beach. Chora is a lovely place with special architecture. I loved those white houses and small streets. Little Venice was my favourite spot. I could sit forever in those cafes right by the sea!! The day was windy and the waves almost touched me!! My friend found this annoying but I loved it! It was great to walk aorund the town and check the gift shops. I took a lot of pictures with the pelecans, they are truly the something special of Mykonos.

Boats from Chora go to beaches all around Mykonos but we stepped out early, in the second stop, in Paradise beach. It was gorgeous! So many people, so clean water, such a party atmosphere. The beach bars give a joyful atmosphere and young people dance all the time. We lefdt after a couple of hours in Paradise because the cruise ship would sail, but I am already looking to come to Mykonos in summer and stay (a lot!!) more.

Lots of partying

Mykonos is awesome! So many great beaches and lots of partying! With the scooter you can visit some amazing places. Paranga beach is beautiful, as is Platis Gialos. The sea is like the sea of the carribean! And they have some great restaurants. Paradise beach is the place to be at 5pm when Tropicana bar starts pumping out the music! There are also 2 great clubs there. Paradise Club and Cavo Paradiso that start getting busy about 12-1am (Cavo a little later). Space is amazing in Mykonos town, as is the town itself, great food, shopping and the most beautiful town. Sunset at Little Venice is a must at one of the bars down there. Mykonos really does cater for all ages and interests! However, you may feel a bit old if you are not between 22 to 26. I CAN'T GET ENOUGH... I will be back next year!

Mykonos in August

If you want to party all day and all night, if you like the crowded places, clubs and beach bars full of hundreds of people dancing and drinking... and if you are single I guess.. then Mykonos is the place for you.

Especially in August, the island gets so crowded that all places seem full. The streets, the traditional Greek labyrinth paths seems even more tight with all the people walking around, shouting, singing or... drinking.

This crowded feeling follows you everywhere near the port and the town there called Chora. Beaches like Paradise and Super Paradise are actually big beach parties, with loud music and people dancing all day and night. With all this clubbing and party by the day, you can easily imagine what happens in Mykonosby night.

But be careful! The island has the perfect party reputation for summer vacation, but also attracts a big number of homosexuals and transsexuals. If you are one of them, enjoy! If not, be careful what kind of bars you enter, so you won't get surprised or get into uncomfortable situations. Same happens outside the bars too, it's up to you which places you visit and how much this annoys you or not.

If you don't like that kind of amusement, I would suggest you to stay outside of Chora, or try to visit the island at another time of the year, not August! Accomodation can be pretty expensive in some of the hotels, but you can always find a cheaper room to let or even camping.

After an exhausted night out, you can enjoy a coffee at one of the many coffee shops by the port, always with the company of the pelicans.

Island of love and happiness

Mykonos is a very beautful island. I have been for 28yrs and have seen many changes, but still lovely best beaches in Greece. The Greeks call Mykonos the island of love and happiness, and that's what it is, a very happy place. Don't go in August though as it is too crowded and you can't really enjoy what Mykonos has to offer you. Winter can be nice also, if you like quietness.

Mykonos has the best beaches in Greece, a completey different life style and people on every beach, with wonderfull reasturants. Little Venice area with beautifull windmills great for watching a beautifull sunset.

Nightlife is good, lovely to sit at the lovely port of Mykonos and can also enjoy a lovely breakfast there, while the fishermen return and the lovely island pelicans go to get their fish for breakfast.

Not a great deal of historical monuments on Mykonos, but a short and spectacular boad ride away, you will visit the small unihabited island of Delos, with more history than you can handle. Read up a bit on it first so as you can get the most out of your trip, daily trips around 10.00 am returning about 1.00 pm. Wear a hat as it gets real hot. Greeks love to sing and dance so get in shape and join in.

Try to visit the other side of the island where you will find the real beauty and beaches, not full of sunbeds. Organised island safaris are also an option for you and great if your travelling alone, lunch included. Also organised boat beach trips available, well I could go on forever, just go and enjoy.

Have you seen the lovely film Shirley Valentine? it was filmed in Mykonos mostly at the beautifull beach of AiYanis, with many local folk taking part.

Mykonos has some of the finest reasturants in Greece, many being at the beaches. Some of the bars give bad booze so whatch out, go to reputable places. This happens all over Greece, stick to bottle water, no tap water and make sure you don't get rusty ice cubes.

Mykonos is expensive so be prepared, but it is well worth it. Either stay in town or at a beach, there are many hotels, which are neither here nor there and that can spoil your holiday. There are many taxis but come the busy summer season and they can be almost impossible to get. Take care of your valuables at all times. Rent a car rather than a moped to avoid accidents.

Stay out day and night

I go to Mykonos almost every summer, this is my best place to relax in the beaches and to do the best clubbing of my life!! All Greek islands are beautiful but Mykonoshas something special, I believe. It is probably the feeling of the people who come here to enjoy and spend the night out and laugh loudly and have fun!!

My best beaches are Paradise and Super Paradise, although they get so crowded. I like crowded beaches (it is the best way to meet new people!!!). Cavo Paradiso is the best club far, and some small bars in Chora are also cute and fun.

In Mykonos, you stay out day and night. You go in the room only to have a shower and change and then you go out again. Some days, you don't even need to change your swim suit!! Such a nice island if you are 20!

Exceptionally charming in every aspect

Mykonos is an exceptionaly charming island with one of the quaintest town centres! The nightlife is non-stop with something for everyone. It's a fantastic place to people watch, everything goes on Mykonos. The beaches are also lovely and clean, despite the crowds and the party atmosphere after 5 is amazing! If you want some sightseeing, you can always pop across to Delos. I didn't actually notice anything I would consider historical on the Island. Perhaps because I wasn't looking for it?

You have to know where to eat in Mykons, to eat well. Otherwise, I'd say most of the taverns are pretty standard. I was impressed with the seafront tavern at Paraga. The food was lovely (and reasonably priced) and the waiters extremely polite and friendly.

I must admit that for an island which could literally sink under the hundreds of thousand of visitors it receives, it is well organised and most importantly: clean! Did you know that little old men and women come out at six in the morning and whitewash the little lanes that run through the town? There could be a few more taxis on the Island and the issue of "reserved" sunbeds is somewhat facist!

Book accomodation and ferry / plane tickets well in advance. Ladies, I would advice against high heels on the Island, especially as until you work out the maze of little lanes in the town centre - you'll be doing a lot of walking!

Be prepared to relax

Mykonos was wonderful for its beaches and nightlife. Tropical Bar at Paradise beach and Skandinavian Bar in Mykonos Town was a blast. It was great fun to seat around at the taverns to watch people.

Everything starts very late, for example eating dinner at 10 pm, so be prepared to relax and enjoy the social aspect of dining in the greek isles. Eat in a restaurant to see the sunset. Restaurants are plentiful and busy. Generally food is of an excellent standard. Service is prompt and friendly. Seafood is great in Mykonos.

Also be prepared to walk A LOT. Explore, explore, explore, there is so much more to see than just the area your hotel is located. The entire island is beautiful. It was very hot in June so dress accordingly.

Mykonos is a great place to have dinner late, wander the shops, then have a drink or two at some bars, club if you wish until the early hours, sleep in late, head to the beach and start all over again.

Check seafood before you order

Mykonos has the aspects which will suit a lot of holiday makers, quieter beaches and shining white villages or busy party beaches and large hotels. We chose a quiet cheap hoilday during the day, enjoyed a half day excursion to Delos close by and took an easy bus ride into town for food and clubs. Beautiful island with some sandy beaches. Taxis were reasonable although the locals mentioned there weren't enough for the island during peak season.

During our stay in Mykonos, we found the food at restaurants much more satisfying and prices were similar to tavernas. Greek salads are a must! Very refreshing on a hot holiday enjoyed shaded from the sun with a chilled drink! We tried a varied of dishes (with a vegetarian with us) but for me the Moussaka was exquisit and swordfish was brilliant. The aubergine's too! Mmm! Just be careful when ordering seafood anywhere, never order seafood you cannot see and carefully assess the price as some are charged by weight! We could not get enough of the Gyros (kebabs) in Greece, as a cheap snack or filling lunch with a Greek salad, there is definately something special about it.

For coffee shops, I didn't really enjoy the coffee in Greece so we made our own on the island and (I expect some of you may disapprove) went to the local Starbucks in Athens to get our caffeine fix!

Mykonos was the first Greek island I went, about 4 years ago, and this summer I went back for a second visit. Mykonoshasn't changed a lot, only the wildlife is a bit wilder with ungly transexual shows which really ruin the image of the island and come in contrast to the beautiful beaches.

If you step out of Chora and Super Paradise, you will see a couple of beautiful settlements, high hills with great view and friendly people. I really love Mykonos and don't like it when people are thinking of Mykonos as an "orgy island" with sex shows. This doesn't match to Mykonos or to Greece. I personally avoided these clubs because some people get drunk and cause troubles. Chora is a very beautiful place, probably the best town in all the cyclades islands I have visited. I love the small streets and the busy shopping, the nice taverns in Little Venice and the small boats at the port. You can see many picturesque scenes in Mykonos if you take notice, like fishermen doing their nets or priests making the service in the small churches. I attended a service by chance in a small church in Ano Mera (although I am not Orthodox) and found it really rejuvenating.

Great for partying

I am going to Mykonos almost every summer since 2000. If you except expensive food and bad transportation, the rest is a lovely island with much life. Enjoy the beaches, the sun and the dancing! This is Mykonosfor!! I prefer Paradise beach from Super Paradise, it is a bit less crowded and it is easier to rent bananas and play summer sports. The clubs around the beaches play music all day and you can hear even if you are far in the sea.

Mykonos is great for partying but also offers more elegant and relaxing environments, especially if you drive north of Chora. Authorities must improve parking conditions. It is embarracing to advertise this island so much and not be able to provide the basic services to the tourists, like parking.

Another problem, as I said, is expensive food. Either you pay an arm and a leg to get good food and service, or the food sucks. If you are Greek, things are easier because you know where to go and what to do, but if you are a new visitor, you may get frustrated a bit. Do not worry, go where most people go if you want to be in crowded places or rent a car and go to the opposite way if you want to be alone! Stay away from tourists who come to have sexual orgies, get drunk and have drugs. Authorities should get rid of them, they are bad for the island! The natural beauty of Mykonos should be more advertised, rather than the sexual orgies!
